Possibilities…Isn’t that the most delicious of words? According to Webster’s Dictionary the definition for possibility is:
1: the condition or fact of being possible
2: archaic : one’s utmost power, capacity, or ability
3: something that is possible
4: potential or prospective value — usually used in plural
One’s utmost power, capacity, or ability. It may be archaic, but I really like that definition. We have the power to make things possible. We don’t have to rely on someone else to make things possible for us, we can do it ourselves. And I think rather than we “can” do it ourselves, it should be we “must” do it ourselves. My mantra going forward shall be, “I have the power to make things possible.”
And the possibilities are limitless. Or rather limited only by the amount of effort I choose to put into it, whatever it may be. I think possibilities start out as questions that we ask ourselves. “What if I move?” “What if I go back to school?” “What if I join a club or organization?” “What if I step out of my comfort zone and do something I wouldn’t normally do?” What if’s are possibilities in disguise. The thing with possibilities is that they require action in order for them to become realities.
“I have the power to make things possible.”
I met with a friend on the Friday before Valentine’s Day. He was on his way to deliver some roses and candy to someone that he’s had his eye on for a while – he was excited and nervous about what her reception might be to his overture; he was using his utmost power and taking action. The potential was there for his overture to be completely shot down, but the potential was also there for something positive to happen. When he came back, his face was alive with that very same possibility of what might be. I was, and am, happy for him, no matter how this turns out down the road, because once you crack open the door of your heart to the possibility of love, it stays open and receptive.
“I have the power to make things possible.”
There’s a song by Darius Rucker, of Hootie and the Blowfish fame, called History in the Making. The song is chock full of possibilities in just about every line…“tonight, maybe tonight…this could be our last first kiss, the door to forever, what if this was that moment, that chance worth taking…”
Chances…possibilities…they are definitely risks worth taking. We might get our hearts broken. We might be scared about making that move. We might need to take a variety of classes at school or join a couple of different clubs. We might need to gather up our courage in the face of failure and try again. But if we don’t take that risk, that chance, are we really living or are we merely existing?
“I have the power to make things possible.”
Inside, baby inside
Can you feel the butterflies?
Floating all around
Cuz I can sure feel them now
Tonight, maybe tonight
Is a start of a beautiful ride
that will never end
And baby I’ve got a feelingThis could be one of those memories
We want to hold on to, cling to,
One we can’t forget
Baby, this could be our last first kiss
The door to forever
What if this was that moment
That chance worth taking
History in the making

I can think of specific moments when I had to make the decision to take a risk that had lots of possibility…And plenty of chance of failure. Was it worth the risk? I say YES!
oh the possibilities!
Wonderful positive thoughts. Thanks!

What an inspiring post!!! I too like to believe that anything is possible..that we have that power of possibility within ourselves…that we are all ‘possibilitarians’. That we are all here and writing like this…is a testament to anything’s possible. Thank-you for this. And – love the image!!!

Your image is like a fireworks’ bombastic display, Toni, which is cause for celebration and dance. Anytime we risk a possibility, I believe there is a huge fluttering of angelic wings, ecstatic about our leap of faith. We do our part of the dance and they get to do the rest. I bet they are waiting every day just hoping it will happen. I love it. I love whatever set you in motion to write this.

Yes, I can see we really do think alike. This is a fantastic message. You got it spot on when you wrote, “The thing with possibilities is that they require action in order for them to become realities.”
I’ve been one of those people since high school. In fact, my husband often reminds me that the thing that drew him to me the most was that I was so adventurous. That translates to taking action and doing something rather than sitting back and spectating. Gosh, I love what you wrote today. Excellent.

Thought-provoking. At times I have taken risks and been so thrilled with what came out of them and it then gives you so much confidence in yourself to try more. Other times, I think about them, get all excited (especially late at night when I’m at my creative best), but things fizzle out and they never quite come to fruition, other life things take precedence, it seems. I think I need to “seize the moment” and “go for the gold” more.

Oh the possiblities if I were to stop letting my “I can’ts get in the way.” Thanks Toni.

To go forward one have to take risks and it’s so rewarding when one have finished the task and accomplished something. Thank for a thought provoking post Toni!

You are so very correct! Each of us holds the key to our own possibilities. The problem starts when we let others discourage us with their impossible attitudes. Let the fireworks fly…the sky’s the limit (or maybe the universe is the limit these days). Farmergal

This is a great post. But I will admit I laughed when I read margie’s comment, “Leap and a net will appear” because that is what was running through my mind while I read this! Sisters with one brain apparently

Love your image — exploding with possibilities! It is truly amazing what can open to us IF we explore the possibilities.
