It doesn’t mean more than it means

I know this man, he has a good heart, and he has done some good things. But he never got the credits he thinks he deserves and he is bitter about it. It tears him apart.

And I think of this Joan Armatrading song:

Kind words and a real good heart doesn’t mean you get respect
Kind words and a real good heart doesn’t mean you get the best
It does not mean they won’t get brutal
It does not mean they won’t assault you
With a kind heart
With a kind heart

Bad guys sometime hard to find, cos they don’t all dress in black
Good guys sometime make mistake, I say don’t look, Don’t look back
Be mindful how you get used up, You can’t always trust an honest man,
Be mindful how you get used up, You can’t always trust an honest man,
you gotta make your own beginning
mark it down
growing pains
with a kind heart
with a kind heart

Kind words and a real good heart doesn’t mean you get respect
Kind words and a real good heart doesn’t  mean you get the best
it doesn’t mean the whole world loves you
it doesn’t mean more than it means

and I want to say to him: get over it, don’t waste your life being bitter!
I’m sorry, it doesn’t mean more than it means.

Oh me oh my, Petra. Have not we all been in this same spot at one time or another in our lives?! (sigh) The thing is, if we don’t get over it, our good heart grows iller by the minute and before long life itself is no longer good and no one wants to be with us, including ourselves.

I can’t think of a better image for your post. Where in the world did you see that?!

It’s so true that often we miss the goodness in people..and that they don’t get the recognition or respect that they deserve. I think the best advice to a man like that is to teach him to love himself..to be happy with that and hopefully not so sad and bitter.
    Love the image!!!!

So much to ponder; the thought provoking image and lyrics. *sigh*

I like this line: “Good guys sometime make mistake, I say don’t look, Don’t look back”

Interesting…I love the lyrics. I know it’s tough on our prideful self to not get “credit.” I get past it by not doing things only for myself, but always for others and for God. That way, the credit goes where it deserves, not to me. And I can always get over it:)

And by the way, the photo is fab. Were you on the back of a horse too? Inquiring minds want to know.

Love the photo. One of my main goals as I move through this certain age is to not become bitter. It’s not always easy, but I think if you don’t want to be “torn apart” you have to try. This was very thought-provoking, and a good reminder.

It’s nice to get some recognition for the good things that we do – it’s the icing on the cake, so to speak, but we should be satisfied with the cake and not care about the icing. Easier said than done, but something for which to strive. I agree with Kelly, a very thought provoking post – well done, Petra. LOVE that photo!!

i love joan armatrading, and so many of her songs have meant so much to me at various stages in my life. she writes like she’s talking to you, writing the words for you…at those times, at least that’s how it feels. intriguing image, where is it?? (it looks mongolian??)

What a great image and such symbolic words to go with it!!!

A long time ago I learned to not do things and then look for thanks (or recognition), it always led to being asked to do more than I could give. It was never good enough. Then you do feel bitter and resentful. Doing something perfect enough for me and for the goodness in my own heart works. This was a great post Petra. Thanks.
